Why would you consider yourself irrelevant when you have a family to support and, take care of?

Years ago when I was learning first aid in dangerous situations it was drilled into us over and over again that we must first of all make ourselves secure before we even think of attempting to save lives.

Seems a rather selfish way of thinking, right? Looking after no#1. After all, aren’t we supposed to be heroes rushing in to save the day even if we lose our own lives in the process?

It really is a question of balance. A man’s dreams should always be subject to the needs of his family; and; on the other hand, looking after himself first puts him in the frame of mind to best serve the needs of his family.

It’s also making sure that the family does not suffer through his selfishness attitude and actions. Even better if they are all on board.

To a point, yes. As soon as I had my first kid I realized I am not here for myself anymore. Of course I realize I still need to take care of myself, my wife, and enjoy life, but in the grand scheme of things everything in this world evolves around my kids.
