How to cure an infected belly button ring?

I got it pierced December 08, saw signs of pussing so I called the doctors and talked to them, they told me to put some ointment on it but it dried it out big time and made it irriated; so I stopped using it. The hole inside my belly button just started bleeding, kind of alot. What should I do? 🙁

Take out the ring… Is it really worth having the damn thing?

clean the ring and your button with salt water 2-3 times a day for 2weeks

If you haven’t taken the ring out, do it. Was your belly button with antibacterial soap, dry it really well, put some peroxide on it and let it fizzle for a few, dry again with a clean cotton ball or something, then put ointment on it. If it gets really sore or looks more infected, go see your doctor right away.

alcohol is better than salt, killing the infection is more significant than closing an infection

*remmeber salt doesnt kill infection it closes wounds*
my suggestion is alcohol first than salt after not at the same time different intervals*

Take the flippin thing out, clean the area well, and keep it clean daily, if the infection is not too bad, dust it with medicated talcum powder, it is in a naturally wet place, makes me shiver to think about it. Good luck

This may seem completely different to other’s answers but do NOT put something like peroxide on it and definately don’t take your bar out. If you do so, it will only result in permanent nasty scarring and it may even take a while for the hole to close up.
Generally a lot of people will get scabbing and pussing within the first month or so of getting their naval pierced. You must understand that you have a foreign object in you and sometimes the body has trouble adjusting to that foreign object — everybody’s body is different!

My best advice to you would be to leave the piercing in. I can understand it may even be really sore right now. Get into a daily routine of cleaning your piercing… Buy an Ear Care Antiseptic, which will usually come in a 50 – 100ml spray bottle. While showering, slowly move the bar a few millimetres back and forth, which will help to rid any pus or severe crust formation. After your shower make sure you keep the piercing DRY. It’s as simple as drying around with a cotton ear bud! Use the Ear Care Antiseptic twice a day – when you wake up and before you sleep. It will take 1 minute. Spray it on and/or spread the antiseptic around the holes of the navel piercing.

My last bit of advice is that salt water is actually good for your piercing. Although while the piercing is severely infected like yours is, in a few days or weeks when the infection dies down, go to the beach! Salt water has many benefits for our skin!

My hole never stopped bleeding when I got mine pierced. Sometimes a little crust is good. It shows the body is trying to repair. Dont go out of your way to scrape the crust and pus away, this will generally reopen the wound deeper and scream for infection! Just try moving it that little bit in the shower – let the hot water naturally rid the pus and crust that’s ready to be ridden!

Let me know how you go!

As much as I know you don’t want to hear this, I would say take it out! Let it heal and then get it done again in a few months.

But if you’re anything like me then that’ll be the last thing you’ll want to do, lol. A good method of trying to heal and keep clean fresh piercings is to pour boiling water into a mug, add half a tea spoon of rock salt (has to be rock salt, not table salt), stir and then use this to dab the piercing gently with cotton wool.

Belly buttons usually take up to 6 months to heal anyway so you might be able to save it before it gets more infective.

    Good luck.

ok listen. doctors don’t have any training regarding healing a piercing. ointment was a bad idea. discharge is a sign of normal healing, not necessarily infection. go to http://www.safepiercing.org/piercing/oral-aftercare/ for aftrecare and what to aviod. so far, you have not described infection. do the saline soaks and i’m sure you will be fine. next time you are worried about it, go to a piercer, not a doctor.

You need to remove the piercing immediately, and clean it with sea salt and warm, not hot, water. If it is infected, you do not want to keep the barbell in, as it could potentially continue to contaminate it. You need to soak the entire contaminated barbell, with both balls removed, in rubbing alcohol to re-sterilize it. If you only clean the wound, because that is what it is, it will do nothing to keep the infection away. You should also use a triple antibiotic ointment on your belly button piercing to keep it from becoming reinfected. If it continues to become infected, you may need to see your doctor. Your doctor may advise that you remove it until it heals, and (if you still want it pierced) get it re-pierced.

DO NOT PUT ANY ALCHOL PRODUCTS IN IT!
this will cause it to dry out even more!
keep the bar in and let it heal!
ive had mine for 2 years and ive had a few infections, just keep useing salt water 2 times a day and use anitbatiral soap in the shower.
go and see your local piercer shop for more advice 🙂
