Why does the military make differences for age and gender in their physical testing?

With regards to physical testing standards, are there scientific reasons for why military members have to do less with more time to do it as they get older? How are those standards defined, and who comes up with them?

your body starts to break down as you get older, but their honestly shouldnt be much of a difference in my opinion in the PT requirments till after 35 cause you need to be fit as a solider so if you cant hack it then you need to fix it

the older you are after a certain point the easier it gets, like an 18 yr should be able to do more pushups than a 37 year old and so the test takes that into consideration. Same with the run. the older u get, u could practically walk it at certain ages and pass.
