There really aren’t many these days. People need to stop falling for the false left/right paradigm.

its more along the lines of basic and major issues. for instance democrats are more gay friendly are usually pro choice and approve of anti gun laws
republicans are not gay friendly usually pro life and take the second amendment literally as in everyone should be able to have any kind o gun they want. republicans are also usually very literal christian

Same difference as there is in heads or tails of a coin.

There is no discernible difference between the two except for the labels, “democrat” and “republican”. Both parties are only polyps of the general political spectrum and both believe in tax and spend policies, deficit financing, more powerful government, “Czars” of various kinds, the abolishment of the first 10 amendments to our constitution, and lying to achieve their agenda.
The politicians are out of control, they believe that they are actually royalty, but NOW is the time to remind the politicians that they are not our masters, they are our servants.
We voted the Democrats out, we can vote out the Republicans too. We _will_ elect non-politicians if the experienced politicos continue in their refusal to listen to us.
We need to have a “REMOVE INCUMBENT” option on the ballot.

Well it depends on what time in american history you are talking about!
There are 4 major distinctions.
Liberal vs. Conservative
Populous vs. Libertarian
Liberals tend to like change. They don’t mind laws being passed to make change for the better. They are usually anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro-human rights (gay marriage and other issues), things of that nature. It is usually the view of city-dwellers and recent immigrants. They are very much pro-equality.
Conservatives are known for being against change. They tend to favor the judeo-christian idea of what society should be like. They are usually pro-christian in religious issues.
Populous people think the government should be big. Populous views generally take into account the common man. They want everyone to have an equal footing in the world and for some people to not have the advantages other can only dream of. Things populous people would be for would be equal funding to schools in the ghetto as schools in the rich areas and social welfare to poor people and the disabled. They are pro-health care. They like to have a lot of laws about this sort of thing and don’t mind limiting corporations when they do bad things to the common man. They are usually pro-environment on environmental issues. Common men are disproportionately populous.
Libertarians, on the other hand think the government should be small. They think that there should really only be a few laws about what businesses can and can’t do. They think that businesses work best when they don’t have any laws to work around. They view the entire population as being more important that the common man. They are fine with having a wide in the gap between the rich and poor. America was very libertarian in the late 1890’s. There was a lot of child labor and people being poisoned by the products they ate. They are pro-business on environmental issues. Heads of corporations and wealthy folks are commonly libertarians.
So, right now in america:
Democrats are Liberal Populous folks (but pretty non-extreme right now)
and
Republicans are Conservative but confused on Populous vs. Libertarian.
Republicans are pro business in any way (look how they help agriculture, the auto industry and the baking industry) but they are making laws about what the common man can and cant do. this is largely after 9/11 and they say it is okay because of “homeland security”.

Doesn’t it depend on which Democrat or which Republican your talking about?
Some Republicans are exactly like some Democrats.
Some Democrats are more conservative than some Republicans (Ben Nelson, Zell Miller).
Only a few Democrats voted against the original Iraq war authorization. Now most Democrats believe that the Iraq war was a mistake, as does three quarters of the population.
Your question is so broad that there are a million different answers, going back to Jackson, who ran as the first Democrat.
But let me just say this. Today, since Reagan, Bush Jr and now Palin, the Republicans have gone insane. Nearly everything they say is a lie. The reverse is not true. Most of what Democrats say these days is actually what they think the truth is. That is the biggest difference between Democrats and Republicans today. Mike Murphy – a Republican strategist spent the time on the last Meet the Press saying Obama is finished. When told that his rating is nearly the same as Reagan’s was, he replied ‘Well, he doesn’t have Reagan’s economy’. In fact, that is even false. The unemployment rate was 10.8% during this time of Reagan’s presidency.
I could go on – from the death panels, to Brigtebart lying about ACORN and Sherrodd, to Mitch Mconnell lying about Bush’s deficit (he gave a 1.3 trillion deficit to Obama, according to the CBO, not 400 Billion), to whatever the current fake scandal is – oh yeah, tax cuts to the rich make them hire more employees – it’s all just one pile of lies.
And again, Democrats, probably to be in contrast, don’t lie like that. They quote the WSJ saying that Obama’s stimulus plan created 1 million jobs. They point out that our tax rates are the lowest they have been in decades. They point out that 1/3rd the stimulus plan was a tax cut – the largest middle class tax cut ever. They point out that when our nation became a super power, we had a 92.5% top rate. They point out in Obama’s last budget was a bit smaller than his earlier one, that the deficit and the percent of government spending over GDP is smaller than before.

A democrat has an alliance with the liberals, A republican has an alliance with the far right.
A republican may be as liberal as a democrat, but if you are looking for a characteristic that all democrats have, it’s that alliance.

Democrat support government intervention in the economy but not with social issues.
Republican do not support government intervention in the economy but do support the government’s role to regulate personal lives.
As noted, there are all kinds of Republicans and Democrats.
Right now, for example, most Republicans support intervention in the economy and social issues. The former, to support larger corporations and the latter on issues like homosexual marriage and abortion.
Likewise, there are family values Democrats who are pro-life but traditionally Liberal on other issues.
