How do I find someone to tell me roof condition and whether leaks are fixed, without getting scammed?

If I ask a roofer, I have to be concerned that they will not be honest. If I ask an inspector, they want 250 dollars. How do I find people who know what they are talking about, do not have an “interest” in overstating a problem, who would perhaps answer the questions (coming and looking at home) for only about 20 dollars or so. Is there a name or title for someone willing to just look stuff over and answer basic questions without needing to be “certified” experts?

Most roofing contractors offer free assessments and bids. My suggestion is to make a few appointments with different roofing contractors and then get the consensus of what they say. You should be able to infer the quality of your roof based on what they say.
