Why did Black Americans not enjoy their freedom after 1865?

I need to briefly know about: the civil war, the outcome in 1865, why there was a civil war, the result and the changes to the constitution. Please explain why although black people had been given their freedom it wasn’t as they expected and to conclude, a judgement on why black americans couldn’t enjoy their freedom. Was there just ONE reason or many? Were the reasons Economic? Political? Belief? Which was the most important?

Thanks for your help and please try to make the language as simple as possible.

I seen a documentry a few years ago and it said the slaves were unable to look after themselves in the same way the owners looked after them…But I cant see that as alot were treated very badly …but as it really gone away in other countrys

There had been talk of 5 acres of land and a mule to work it. Nope, did not happen.
The Southern States passed white only laws. Cafes, hotels, even drinking fountains were made white only. Blacks had to ride in the back of buses. White only schools. Poll taxes, so they could not afford to vote.
The North was no better. Just more subtle. They created closed house agreements in neighborhoods. School districts that went around the Black areas, and put them in ‘project’ housing’.
They were treated like second class citizens.

I would have to agree with the first 2 answers. It was not just a mix of piss poor schools and doctors, but also the areas where slavery was the strongest was in the deep south — namely East Texas across to the Carolinas (NOTE: It was big in Central Texas as well as the Virginias but not as big as the other states mentioned).

Also in that region the KKK, Knight’s of the White Camilia, and other “racist” white supremists groups were at their strongest. Since they were so strong in that region, and control much of the politics, they created local laws that they knew black americans would not qualify for such as better health care, rights to vote (you needed to be able to read the voter cards or even drive to the voter areas), better schools, etc. That is why so many black americans either moved to the northern states in the early to mid 1900 to better their lives and that of their children.

Like the previous member has stated that most were owned by Masters and although their conditions were in many cases appalling they hadn’t the skills to become truly independent.
Social experiments happen everywhere but seldom do they solve situations they just provide a different platform to work from!

i’m no expert but i do know the American civil war happened because the southern states wanted to leave the union, it was nothing to do with slavery, the only reason the north abolished slavery was because Britain had abolished it years before and thought America should do likewise, Britain was considering helping the confederates so the north abolished slavery to stop Britain entering the war against them.
a fact that is not mentioned very often is that Abraham Lincoln and his government purchased a country in Africa (i think it was Liberia, but am not certain) to send all the slaves back to, but was assasinated before he could do it.

The slaves had no idea what they needed to do to care for themselves, individually. Had they banded together and pooled their skills they could have accomplished much, but that’s another debate.
Primarily the white locals did a lot of the damage to the newly released people, passing laws they forbade them from all essential services and shops. The Federal Government had no idea of how to provide for several million new citizens that had nothing.
Some lands were confiscated from the rebel leadership, but noting near the quantity to ‘give’ land to this people. Besides if they had gotten hold of land, they would probably been killed or swindled out of the land in no time.
Many stayed where they were and served the landowner as ‘Sharecroppers’ which was nothing more than a slave with a pittance of a wage and/or a small share of the gathered crops.
Schools were sponsored by and paid for by the local citizens, the federal government had not gotten into the destruction of the education system as yet. Blacks did not attend schools because they either were needed to work the farms or refused admittance by the angry whites who had just lost a war with them as an issue.
