What pain medications are prescribed after a Tonsillectomy, and how much do dr’s generally give you?

I’m just worrying because I am having my tonsils taken out next month and I’m 31, I’m afraid of how much pain I will be in, and afraid meds won’t last.
I’ve been on Tramadol for pain before and it doesn’t help my pain. It was like a low pain management pain medication. I know it’s not addictive, but I’m not going to care while i’m in this much pain.

I’ll bet on Tylenol and Codeine. Plan on having the worst sore throat you ever had for a few days. I don’t recall having anything when I had mine out at age 11.

    liquid hyrdocodone (aka liquid lortab).

the dosage depends on your height and weight. mine was 2-3 tea spoons every 4 hours. i started off taking 3 tea spoons every 4 hours but i’m very sensitive to pain killers so by the end of the 3rd day i was terribly sick. i had to stop the pain killers all together for 24 hours and then just take 2 tea spoons every 4 hours.
you’ll probably start off with a half of a container which will last you 4-5 days. you can then get it refilled once which will last another 4-5 days. when i went for my 10 day check up my ENT even offered to refill the pain killers one more time but i said no cuz the pain was going away and i actually still had some from the other bottle left.

don’t worry you’ll have plenty of pain meds and if you can take the full recommended dosage you should be in slightly less pain then me lol.

I had my tonsils out “late” by usual standards, but not as late as you are having them removed and generally the older you are the worse it is. For me however, they gave me liquid tylenol with codeine and liquid vicodin and I took pretty much a medicine cup full twice a day and some days even more. I really needed it for about 2-3 weeks then it was much less painful. There is still some leftover (granted it expired) in the refrigerator right now.
Good luck, hope you do well and the whole “ice cream and popsicle” thing is a load of horse hooey, you probably won’t eat anything other than liquid for a good week…then you get the ice cream and popsicles 🙂
