Is it safe to take antidepressants and also adhd medication at the same time?

I got prescribed Bupropion to help me quit smoking (it is labeled as a anti depressant) and also prescribed Methylin ER for my adhd. I take 1 of both per day. Just wondering if this is safe. I’ve looked on sites and found nothing. Please help me out here. Thx.

    Hi cooley_

This is a great question, and an important one to ask when taking medications in any combination. The best advice I can offer you is to make sure you speak with the pharmacist where you are picking up your medications, as well as speaking with the doctor prescribing the medications.

If you are seeing two different doctors, it is really important they know what the other is recommending and prescribing for treatment.

But more direct to your question, it is NOT uncommon for an individual to be prescribed both an antidepressant and a stimulant type (ADHD) medication. A little known fact is that ADHD very rarely occurs alone. In other words, it is far more common to “co-exist” with other conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and more.

So the real issue becomes, are these two medications compatible, or is there a drug interaction effect?

After that, it’s a matter of personal awareness and monitoring how the medications are affecting you, the individual.

So I hope this answers your question, and you’ll definitely want to check with your prescribing doctor(s) just to make sure and keep them in the loop.

    Good luck.
