Why is it that when you don’t do well in a class people call you lazy and/or that you need to work harder?

I worked my ass off and the best I can do is a 2.4 gpa. I got into college with that and I am in the same situation now I work my ass off just to get the same gpa.

I do know the value of an education which is why I’m going to college. I’ve worked the low paying jobs for a few years and I’ve been poor since I’ve graduated high school.

People tell you that because in this country we believe that a person can achieve anything if he or she works hard enough. That’s why we don’t seem to understand how people can be poor, that people get trapped in poverty and that poor people work. We see a poor person and think that they must spend their paychecks on booze if they have a job–which they probably don’t. It’s terrible.

You’re getting the academic equivalent of this. What you have to recognize is that someone has to be in the middle of every class. Someone has to be at the bottom. But for most jobs, it only matters if you have a degree. Do well in your job and no one will ask what your GPA was.

But . . . .Have you thought about the possibility that you can learn to do better? There are tests you can take to see if you have some sort of learning problem like mild dyslexia or something. And there are classes you can take that are specifically to teach you how to take better notes, study more efficiently, etc. Don’t give up on improving your GPA until you check out these possibilities.

Wouldn’t it be great if you were suddenly earning a 4.0 and everyone praised your hard work, but you knew that because you went to one of those classes you were actually doing a lot less work than you did before?

They think that it is better to be lazy than to have academic problems for other reasons./
