What are Glycemic Foods, what do they do for our body and can you give examples of these?

Is it true they dont give you spikes in your blood sugar? I dont need a link cuz my computer is slow, so if you can explain it in your own words that’d be great.

    Hi,

I have been reading a book about diabetes, and it has a few pages to low glycemic index foods. Yes they absorb sugars into the bloodstream slower, in test patients.

Some examples in the book are oatmeal will provide sugars throughout the morning, and help you avoid snacks that are high concentrations of calories. By adding 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon f cinnamon, you can lower the blood sugar absorption rate by 20% in test subjects.

Another good meal is making split pea soup, take 1 pound of split peas, 1/2 pound of lentils, a small onion chopped up, and 12 cups of water. Cook in a crock pot for 5 hours, and serve. Very low calorie, and great for you.

Also try this. Bake sweet potatoes in a microwave or oven, then peal and eat. Add cinnamon to further slow the sugar absorption rate. Russet potatoes are not as good for you, they have a high absorption rate.

Best to get the book, rather than I type out all 250 pages!

    Good luck,

    Happy New Year !

The Glycemic Index measures how fast sugar in foods reaches the blood stream.

Higher GI food is great for active individuals and athletes who need a quick insulin spike “rise in blood sugar”. For example, a soccer player racing for the ball.

Lower GI food is great for overweight individuals and diabetics . ‘People who need to monitor their blood sugar”.

All food is ranked on the Glycemic Index chart “GI” and certain foods are ranked higher than others. For example, donuts have a higher ranking than whole grain foods because donuts increase blood sugar levels quickly, while whole grains increase blood sugar levels slowly.
