MY CAT IS HEAVY BREATHING AND PANTING LIKE A DOG?

My cat who’s less than a year old and is not over weight, recently started heavy breathing and panting like a dog after playing with his toys?
Why did this start happening now? Should I take him to the vet?

It could be asthma. If it continues, then yes, i would take him to the vet.

But it could be normal. Cats pant like dogs to cool off.

It’s normal they can’t sweat to cool off like we do,they need to get cool by panting.Just don’t overdo it.

I think you should take it to a vet..that doesn’t sound very normal or common…

My cat did that once and he was only 4 months old at the time and was playing fetch with me (yes, my cat plays fetch!) it’s normal when they get overheated from playing, just make sure he has lots of fresh water.

my cat does that 2, hes just over heated like a dog or human they pant to cool off they just don’t do it very often because they can cool off in other ways if she plays hard they usually why, if it still concerns you and it get a lot more heavier, and shes scaring id take her but if not she is fine 🙂

PHONE your vet and ask him what you need to do. He’ll likely have you check your cat’s gum color when this happens, if it’s pale or blue, the cat needs to go in to the vets fast (the cat isn’t getting oxygen). It could be asthma, it could be fluid build up around the lungs, it could be something else. You can’t know, it has to be determined by a vet.

Panting for a cat is not normal, it’s a sign of distress. The vet will check the lungs to see if the cat’s wheezing, and check other things as well. Just make the phone call.
